hi i'm terrance from baltimore, happy holidays wjz. >> and thank you terrance from baltimore. please be careful driving later. we have visibility down less than 1/4 of a mile in some areas that could cause some problems. let's take a look at temps, it's been mild. it's been ranging between 46 and 49 all day long. right now it's at 48. 50 town to the south. 59 in dc. 49 in oakland up in the mountains it's warm just about everywhere. for this time of year our normal high is 45. but our normal low is in the upper 20s so this is very, very low tear.

certainly moist. 52 in annapolis and over in dc. 49, 46 today. 45, 28 that's normal for this date. and the record 68 and i got that 5 degrees in 1951. five degrees on this day. right now east winds and because of the east wind we had that moisture in the ocean. we also have a chance for higher than normal tides on the western side of the bay. maybe one to 2 feet above normal. there's that coastal fog advisory. the rest of the region under the dense fog advisory about 6:00 a.m. mainly north central maryland, eastern shore again and delaware and jersey in southern p. a. i'm sure you probably will again see schools delay on the eastern shore as we saw this morning. all because of this moist flow from the south, just coming up

it is just before 6:30, some clouds and drizzle. here the stories some people are talking about tonight. newtown connecticut and the nation begin to mourn the victims of friday's horrific school shooting. jessica kartalija has more on how the school nurse survived. but first we begin with the latest on the mourning process. >> reporter: funerals were held

today for noah pozner and jack pinto. >> we're going to do everything we can to find out how and why this tragedy occurred. >> reporter: the unspeakable tragedy has sparked a debate over gun control in a culture of violence in america. >> we've all got to be angry, this is not us and them. us against the nra or us against the entertainment industry, this is all of us. >> this has changed the dialogue and it should move beyond dialogue, we need action. >> reporter: a newly formed grass roots is calling for better gun control. it plans to send a delegation to washington on tuesday. >> we have the benefit and misfortune of being on the national stage right now. this is a real opportunity for us to make a statement. >> reporter: schools here will reopen tuesday but sandy hook

elementary will be closed until further notice. i'm troy dunnan. tonight our media partner the baltimore sun reports a local tie, the parents of one of the victims once lived in maryland. >> there are faces attached to those names today and family members and friends are telling their stories. jim axelrod reports from newtown connecticut. >> reporter: simply put, anna marquez greene had the voice of an angel. she did not miss a beat as she sang along with her brother in this home video. in a statement on facebook her father jimmy greene wrote as much as she's needed here and

missed by her mother, brother and me, ana beat us all to heaven, i love you baby girl. >> emily was bright, creative and very loving. >> reporter: robby parker the father of 6-year-old emily honored his oldest daughter with a moving tribute saturday just a day after he and his wife were told their little girl's life had been so tragically cut short. >> she was the type of girl that could light up the room. she always had something kind to say about anybody. and i'm so blessed to be her dad. >> 6-year-old jessica rikos was remembered as a horse loverrer who had asked santa for a new cowboy boots and a cowgirl hat. in a statement her family spoke about their rock. we called her our little ceo for the way she carefully

thought up and planned everything. we cannot imagine our life without her. >> reporter: connecticut's governor is asking for a moment of silence and churches to ring bells exactly a week after the shooting at the school. today we're hearing from a nurse who survived the shooting at newtown. >> reporter: one of the survivors from the school shooting was the school nurse sally cox. she tells scott pelley on 60 minutes she heard the gunman before she actually saw him. >> all of a sudden i heard very loud popping noise. a noise that i've never ever heard before. and my first thought was, was this something with the heating system or did something fall? and i called out to the secretary. barb what is that. and she called out to me, my name. she said sally. and i could just hear like fear in her voice. >> it was something about the way barb called out your name?

>> yes, yes. she just had this horrible sound of fear in her voice. that's what made me just -- because i was about ready to go to see what was going on. the popping kept going off and i just dove underneath my computer desk. the back of the desk has a small opening for like wires to come out. and i just peaked, i could see his feet and his legs from the knees down and his feet were facing in my direction. >> reporter: and i just froze with fear. and then he just -- it was just seconds and then he turned around and i could hear him walk out. i heard the door closed and i heard popping starting all over again. and then the secretary you know she was down behind my desk and we pulled the phone off the desk and she called 911. >> and she said what? >> she said we have a shooter, please send help right away. we have a shooter in the

building. and, then we just wanted to get out of there. >> reporter: sally cox told scott pelley that she stayed in that supply closet for four hours before she knew it was safe to come out. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. and when she was taken out of the building state troopers told her to close her eyes so she would not see the carnage. wjz13 is always on, check in for complete coverage of the tragedy in newtown connecticut. we will bring you the latest on the victim and on the investigation. and a multiple shooting rocks the state of kansas. two police officers were shot to death outside of a grocery store in the county of topeka. the suspect was killed following a two hour stand off with officers. police are not releasing other details about what led up to the shooting. the national transportation safety board releases its preliminary report on a major train derailment in new jersey.

immediate concern. i have three little kids with me. so hair wasn't my -- the furthest thing from my mind and i've never been in a situation like this before. >> reporter: she lost her job, the family home was foreclosed so now she's moved her son and daughters to a shelter. >> find myself a good job and get my life back together. >> reporter: kathie rupert is the coordinator at the shelter. as the saying goes, when you look good you feel good. >> i can look in the mirror and see it and i didn't like what i saw. if i don't like what i saw, if i go out and find a job nobody is going to like what they see. >> reporter: so this salon owner volunteers to style the hair of women who are about to go to job interviews. >> i'm just here to assist them

the nurse who took a call regarding the dutchess was laid to rest today. australian radio host pretented to be the queen asking for an update on the dutchess. she was being treated for morning sickness. the investigation into winehouse cause of death has been reopened. the coroner resigned last month after her credentials were called into question. a new hearing has been ordered for next month. a developing story from washington, d.c. tonight, long

time senator daniel enewey of hawaii has died at the age of 78. the longest running senator and third in line to presidential success. his office says he died of respiratory complications at a washington hospital. nasa's latest moon probe goes out with a bang. the rockets were crashed into the mono. nasa says the probes have been given them unprecedented insight. the planned crash occurred because the probes were running out of fuel. >> scott pelley has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. >> today in newtown connecticut they laid to rest two of 20 children murdered in their school on friday. there are important new developments in the investigation. plus our new poll on gun control. all of that tonight on the cbs evening news.

region, a live look outside right now. great start to the week. meteorologist bernadettewood and bob turk updating the forecast. can you even see me bern? >> i actually can but there's a lot of drizzle coming down in between and the fog is everywhere. that's going to continue through the night. may everyone pick up at times as we head into the overnight hours. notice the temperatures not changing very much. as we head through the day tomorrow. clouds mixing with some sunshine. wind turns around to the midwest and starts to bring in that mild air. it remains mild. tomorrow evening it'll be breezy but we're still sitting at 50 degrees. for the rest of the night here's bob. >> the sun will be a welcomed sight. we'll see more tomorrow, more on wednesday. still mild 58, 53, 51 and more probably another chance of showers coming up on thursday. then it clears out. back in the 40s, that's still above average.

mark is back, he has the wjz the fan sports report. what do you think mark? >> this has not been a december to remember. we've got one more game in this month to make it better than the finale the first of january. ravens they are going to the play offs but they are proceeding in pain. there's a pain of a three game losing streak and the pain of the number of injuries that have played into the ravens december. and another key player is added to the list of wounded. mcclain will miss the regular two season games and the play offs. he is done for the duration after being diagnose with a spinal contusion, an injury he suffered right there when he hurt his neck while making a tackle eight days ago in washington. he sat out yesterday's loss against denver as a result. add mcclain to the list of players who have all missed cig

mcclain. the status of smith will come later this week. speaking of them eli manning and the reigning super bowl champs come to baltimore next. the giants experiencing some frustrations of their own. they're expected to be a play off team but new york has stumbled. yesterday suffering a loss in atlanta. manning's first pass of the game intercepted. the falcons would turn that into a touchdown. they come in first place tie with washington and dallas. in baseball, the orioles have had a relatively quiet offseason while one of their division rivals have orchestrated one of the most dramatic make overs in recent memory. today the toronto blue jays added yet another all star to the roster. the latest to head north.

captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. the funerals began today. two of the children killed in newtown, connecticut, on friday have been laid to rest. mourners leaving the service for six-year-old noah pozner were told to keep his memory in their hearts, but hearts are strained to breaking by the senseless loss. at makeshift memorials, parents held their children and tried to comprehend 20 first graders murdered at sandy hook elementary school along with the six staff members who tried to save them. tonight we know more about how it happened and we have a team of correspondents on this tragedy. first we'll go to jim axelrod.
